PA Energy

Policy Area (PA) ‘Energy’ focuses on ensuring competitive, secure and sustainable energy in the Baltic Sea region.

Regional cooperation in the energy sector is conducted within the framework of the The Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP), whose actions are to be implemented mainly in the areas of energy infrastructure, gas and electricity markets, power generation, security of energy supply, energy efficiency and renewable energy. Regarding electricity and gas markets the focus in on achieving open, competitive and fully integrated regional energy market in the Baltic Sea region.

An agreement on Memorandum of Understanding on the reinforced Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP) and revised Action Plan for EUSBSR PA Energy – BEMIP was reached among the representatives of Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, Sweden and Norway (as an observer) during the Joint Meeting of BEMIP High Level Group and the EUSBSR Policy Area “Energy” of 28-29 May 2015. The Policy Area formulates the following goals:

•      Better interconnected electricity market.

•      Level playing field for market participants.

•       Baltic States integrated to the EU internal electricity market.

•       Interconnected gas grid.

•       Level playing field for market participants.

•       Fuel switching in heating/ Increased use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in heating.

•       Promotion of the development of sustainable energy.

PA Energy is coordinated by BEMIP, Latvia and Lithuania.
